A study to determine whether the 2005 Boeing Machinist (IAM) Strike was justified, in light of world economic realities as perceived by the members of Boeing's Product Acceptance Planning (PAP) Group

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the 2005 Boeing Machinist (IAM) Strike was justified, in light of world economic realities as perceived by the member of the Boeing Product Acceptance Planning (PAP) Group. A review of the Literature was conducted and a questionnaire was designed and distributed among the members of the Boeing Product Acceptance planning department. Data was obtained by tabulating the responses of 95% of the completed questionnaires. A majority of the PAP members felt that the strike was financially Justified, and benefits and wages lost during the one month strike were compensated by the three years contract they received at the end. However, a majority of the population also thought the union demands for high wages and benefits will eventually push the company to move toward outsourcing and off shoring. This study was conducted among the SPEEA Union members about the 2005 IAM Union contract. Further study was recommended about the 2005 SPEEA contract, but surveyed among the IAM union members.
